Angela Bymaster

Dr. Bymaster is a a board-certified family medicine physician and a Fellow of the American Academy of Family Physicians.

Dr. Angela Bymaster graduated from the University of Iowa, Carver College of Medicine and completed her family medicine residency at O’Connor Hospital. Dr. Bymaster is a board-certified family medicine physician and a Fellow of the American Academy of Family Physicians.

Angela, her husband Brett, and their four kids have been residents of the Washington community in Downtown San Jose since 2006. Angela and her husband attend Cathedral of Faith Church in San Jose.

Expertise and strengths include:

  • addiction medicine
  • pediatrics and adolescent medicine
  • family medicine from newborn to elder care
  • foster children, children with neurodiversity including ADHD, autism, learning disabilities, mental health conditions, and reactive attachment disorder
  • general primary care including urgent care, basic sports medicine, and primary care gynecology, dermatology, rheumatology, pediatrics, and orthopedic procedures and injections

Cheryl Ho

Dr. Ho is a board-certified physician in internal medicine and addiction medicine.

Dr. Cheryl Ho, a board-certified physician in internal medicine and addiction medicine, graduated from Stanford University with a BS in biological sciences. She then went on to the University of California - San Diego School of Medicine for her medical training. She completed her residency and chief residency in internal medicine at Santa Clara Valley Medical Center. Dr. Ho was the recipient of the 2017 National Underserved Clinician of the Year award, and serves as a consultant for both local and national policy initiatives. Dr. Cheryl is currently a Stanford University clinical assistant professor of medicine.

Dr. Cheryl’s husband, Douglas, is a pastor at San Jose Christian Alliance Church. Together they are leaders in their new Mountain View church plant, New Vine Community Church.

Dr. Thomas Stafford

Dr. Stafford is board-certified in both internal medicine and pediatrics and has a fellowship in faith and medicine.

Dr. Thomas Stafford spent his undergraduate years at Middlebury College, where he studied biochemistry and Spanish.

Later, he completed medical school at Tufts University, along with an additional year-long fellowship in faith and medicine. Dr. Stafford did his residency training in internal medicine and pediatrics with the University of Southern California at LA County and USC Medical Center.

Throughout his medical training, Dr. Stafford has spent considerable time abroad, researching healthcare for the urban poor in South India and Nicaragua, and teaching public health and medicine in the Middle East.

Brett Bymaster

Executive Director

Brett Bymaster is one of the founders of Healing Grove Health Center.

Brett graduated from Purdue University with honors and a BS in electrical and computer engineering. Brett spent 15 years as an analog chip designer for medical equipment in Silicon Valley startups, earning several patents for his novel inventions.

Brett then served as the youth pastor at The River Church in San Jose CA for seven years before becoming the executive director at the Healing Grove Health Center Foundation. Brett has more than 20 years of experience in helping low-income youth and families in urban communities transform their lives through the good news of Jesus. Brett has volunteered at Washington Elementary in the low-income Washington community of Downtown San Jose for the past 14 years.

Maria Marcielo

Community Engagement Director

Maria Marcelo is the president and founder of Madre-A-Madre. Madre-A-Madre is a Latina empowerment program Maria founded 15 years ago along with then-principal of Washington Elementary, Maria Evans. Madre-A-Madre currently meets every Thursday under Maria and Brett’s leadership. Maria is a leader, activist, organizer, parent of three grown kids, and amazing chef.

Pastors Jairo & Lourdes Sarmiento

Directors Of Spiritual Counseling

Jairo and Lourdes Sarmiento are the lead pastors of Shalom Iglesia Del Pacto in San Jose. They have nearly 40 years of pastoral experience in Central America and the States. Jairo, Lourdes, and their two kids live and minister in the Washington community of Downtown San Jose .

Paola Gonzalez

Director Of Operations

Paola graduated from UC Riverside where she studied biology. Paola is fluently bilingual in Spanish and English. As director of operations, she oversees Healing Grove’s clinical operations while directing our employment programs and community programs. Paola is a member and leader at Venture En Español Church.

Pastora Dania Meza

Director Of Pastoral Ministry

Pastora Dania Meza leads Venture En Español Church along with her husband, Pastor Carlos Alejandro. As director of pastoral ministry, Dania leads Healing Grove’s women’s groups, prayer ministry, and Arte De Vida.

Cindy Sutter-Tkel, MSW

Director Of Financial Aid

Practicing social work for over 30 years, Cindy has a strong commitment to social justice issues. Cindy has worked on issues facing women in poverty both domestically and internationally at Cedarville University, Salvation Army, Baylor University, and San Jose State. Cindy leads Healing Grove’s financial aid and rent assistance programs.

Sandy Kang

Chair

Sandy Kang was born in Korea and spent most of her childhood in the heart of Los Angeles. Upon completing her studies in social welfare at UC Berkeley, she pursued a MA in Religious Studies at Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary. She founded Gateway Preschool Academy in the fall of 2011 and continues to direct the school.

Over the years, she has served as the parent board president and member in her children’s public schools. She also serves on the Central Pacific District Executive Committee of the Christian and Missionary Alliance.

Her heart’s desire is to empower children, youth, women, and families to discover and walk in their full potential.

Daniel Stallsmith

Business Leader

Daniel grew up in North Carolina and came out West after graduating college when he felt called by God to be a missionary in business. Daniel worked and witnessed in tech and now is a full time dad to two daughters, leads a house church with his wife, and wants to journey alongside others in the Bay to better know God.

Karen Chiu

Secretary

Karen Chiu graduated from UC Berkeley with a BS in industrial engineering and operations research.

Karen has spent her entire career in the tech industry in various roles in supply chain, operations planning, sales operations, and business operations. She is currently head of business operations for Barefoot Networks, a startup that was acquired by Intel Corporation in 2019.

Julie Bonner

Treasurer

Julie Bonner graduated from Boise State University with a BA in accounting. She began her career working for the Internal Revenue Service in San Jose, and then moved on to Deloitte where she worked in both the tax and audit departments. She has been a CPA for more than 25 years.

Julie has her own business where she works with both startups and publicly traded companies, assisting the CFO in the areas of SOX, SEC reporting, process improvement, training, and special projects.

Annabel Levya

Spanish-Speaking Community Rep

Annabel attended San Jose State University, earning a BS in sociology with an emphasis on family and a minor in religion. Annabel served as vocational advisor and coordinator for the Centro Latino of Fuller Theological Seminary in Menlo Park, where she also earned her MA in theology.

In addition, Annabel has also served her church through her bi-vocational ministry as youth and junior high co-director where she congregates with the Apostolic Assembly.

Currently, Annabel is the program director for San Jose Bridge Communities, where she forms relationships with community members to link them to services, provide educational opportunities, and form community leaders – all the while leading them to Christ.

Michael Erkelens

Advertising & Marketing

Born in Guatemala, Michael Erkelens moved to California in 1996 and graduated from Santa Clara University’s Leavey School of Business. He is the founder of a marketing agency in the Bay Area, and his extensive network has allowed him to spearhead ministry and marketing efforts all over the world. Michael offers a unique perspective in bridging the cultural gap between top business practices and diverse audiences. Fluent in Spanish and English, he grasps the nuances of both Latino and American cultures and often serves as a liaison for local businesses and their Spanish-speaking clientele. Michael sees his role with Healing Grove as a way to help ensure all people receive the opportunities they need to thrive in our modern society.

Luz is a certificated bilingual elementary school teacher in the San Jose Unified School District. Luz received the 2016 San Jose Unified and Santa Clara County teacher of the year award.

Andres Quintero

Spanish Speaking Community Rep & Government Relations

Andres Quintero is a public policy professional with extensive experience in local government.  Quintero has served as a Senior Policy Advisor, District Director, and Chief of Staff for various local and state elected officials.  Having been elected to public office, Quintero has served the people of East San Jose since 2012.

In 2015, Andres joined the faculty of the Political Science Department at Evergreen Valley College.

Quintero has an extensive record of community service that includes serving as a board member and officer for various non-profit and civic groups, city commissions, various oversight committees, and an advisory body to the President of Mexico.

Quintero’s educational background includes a BA in Political Science, San Jose State University (SJSU), a Master of Public Administration, SJSU.
