Meet our founders and our leader, Brett Bymaster!

A dynamic team of physicians, pastors and community leaders founded Healing Grove in 2020 under the leadership of Brett Bymaster. Check our story below!

It all started in Nov of 2018

Pastors Jairo and Lourdes Sarmiento came to Brett Bymaster and Dr. Angela Bymaster’s home on a fortuitous evening in November of 2018 with a message from God that they’d received in prayer. They were joined by Jairo’s sister, Ruth Sarmiento.

The message: God was calling Dr. Angie and her husband Brett to start a new endeavor, based on the prophecies in Ezekiel 47 and Revelation 22. The vision was to start a clinic called “Hojas de Sanidad”, or the “Leaves of Healing”. Less than a year and a half later, that vision become Healing Grove Health Center!

The leaves of Healing

Ezekiel 47

Fruit trees of all kinds will grow on both banks of the river. Their leaves will not wither, nor will their fruit fail. Every month they will bear fruit, because the water from the sanctuary flows to them. Their fruit will serve for food and their leaves for healing.

Revelation 22

Then the angel showed me the river of the water of life, as clear as crystal, flowing from the throne of God and of the Lamb down the middle of the great street of the city. On each side of the river stood the tree of life, bearing twelve crops of fruit, yielding its fruit every month. And the leaves of the tree are for the healing of the nations. No longer will there be any curse.

Fruit trees of all kinds will grow on both banks of the river. Their leaves will not wither, nor will their fruit fail. Every month they will bear fruit, because the water from the sanctuary flows to them. Their fruit will serve for food and their leaves for healing.

Dr. Cheryl Ho, M.D. and Douglas Thieu

Dr. Cheryl Ho, M.D. and her husband, Pastor Douglas Thieu, joined Dr. Angela Bymaster, M.D. and Brett Bymaster in forming Healing Grove Health Center. Dr. Cheryl and Dr. Angie had previously worked together at the Santa Clara Valley Homeless Healthcare Program, so partnering together on Healing Grove was natural!

Maria Marcelo

The team wouldn’t be complete without Maria Marcelo, founder of the legendary Madre-A-Madre women’s empowerment group. Maria Marcelo was frequently referred to as the mayor of the San Jose Washington/Guadalupe community. She was a force to be reckoned with! Born in poverty in Mexico, she became of the fiercest advocates for the immigrant community in San Jose. Maria Marcelo and Brett Bymaster were inseparable for more than a decade prior to the founding of Healing Grove. They launched an epic battle to get a park in the low income Washington Community, which culminated in the $10 million Tamien Park (watch the story here).

Maria Marcelo and Pastor Lourdes Sarmiento became the first two hires at Healing Grove in early 2020!

Remembering Maria Marcelo

Tragically, Maria was killed on Dec 7th, 2022 while leading a prayer walk. Maria is in our memories everyday. But her legacy continues! Maria’s daughter, Maria Hernandez has taken over the role as Healing Grove community engagement director, and president of Madre-A-Madre.

Brett Bymaster and Angela Bymaster

Healing Grove is led by Brett Bymaster. Brett was born and raised in Indiana. He graduated with honors from Purdue University in 2000, and then headed West for Silicon Valley. Brett married Dr. Angie Bymaster after they met in Oakland at “Mission Year”, a year long inner city ministry program. Brett spent nearly 15 years working at Silicon Valley tech startups, earning several patents, before becoming a pastor. Brett is now the Executive Director of Healing Grove Health Center, responsible for leading the staff, vision and mission of the organization.

Brett and his wife, Dr. Angie have 3 adopted kids from South Sudan, one God Daughter, one biological child, and one grandchild. They love spending time with all 6 of the kids and going on dates with each other.

Brett and his oldest adopted daughter, Martha, co-authored “It feels like the burning hut”, a story about Martha’s journey from war torn South Sudan, to America through foster care, and then finally finding a permanent family in the Bymaster’s home. Learn more at burninghut.org!
